Symptoms of BACFFTLD (Been a Christian For Far Too Long Disorder)

Warning: Are you disaffected, disillusioned, disjointed or even downright disappointed?
You may be the victim of BACFFTLD!
- Despite its long and intimidating name, BACFFTLD is quite a common disorder and is frequently mis-diagnosed.

Is this you?
Being a Christian for many years has its advantages. There are certain things which a person gains from years of service which cannot be gained through training seminars or personal life-coaching. Maturity is acquired from all the times you pick yourself up after life has knocked you down. Like a battle-hardened soldier is an asset in the heat of a frantic fire-fight, the counsel of a seasoned Christian can be a valuable source of level-headed encouragement and assurance. But years of service also come with their own dangers…

Symptom #1: Anybody who is passionate about anything is either naïve, in the “honeymoon” phase, or ambitious for leadership.

Symptom #2: Any activity which is repeated with any semblance of regularity smacks of “religion”.

Symptom #3: Most worship songs are outdated or sound like Hillsong.

Symptom #4: Most sermons lack theological depth.

Symptom #5: Most demonstrations of the spirit’s touch are “fake”.

Symptom #6: Outdoor evangelism is for young people.

Symptom #7: Church meetings either start too early or too late or too often and are always too long.

Symptom #8: Leadership is controlling.

Maybe the onset of this disorder is caused by the neglect of a fundamental (Christ)ian principal: Christianity is for beggars, not for rich people.* Christianity is for hungry, thirsty, shabby, broken beggars. After many years of the Spirit’s nourishment, healing and blessing it’s easy to forget that the Spirit is my drink and the Logos is my eat and without them I die. Dead religion is not the frequency with which I do things, it is the spirit of a hypocrite who hears the word but does not do it or love it.

Cure: Fall in love with Jesus and be baptised in the Holy Spirit.

*James 2:5
